Polish people have been betting and gambling for centuries, but it started on a big scale with the first gambling house built in Sopot, the north of Poland, in1920. It offered betting games and was allowed to citizens over the age of 18. Players from different areas that visited Sopot for tourism were provided with accommodation overtime of 1927.
This resort reached the peak of its production through betting games in the 1930s. Soon, shillings from the Red Army destroyed many gambling buildings, but this in Sopot stayed safe because tourists also used it for accommodation.
20th century
World War 2 ended in 1946, and Poland got annexed by the Soviets. Since soviet laws for gambling were strict, the majority of betting games got banned. Though gambling was banned, a Polish shipping company found an alternative and started offering different gambling games, including betting games.
They eventually pulled Polish gambling out of the forbidden status by the year 1989. This was around the time when the USSR weakened down and started collapsing.
In 1998, the ban was lifted entirely, and land-based casinos were opened, and betting games restarted in Poland. The 1980s and 90s were the start of a new era of Polish betting.
