March's Problem Gambling Awareness Month sheds light on the rising need for support in Kentucky's betting landscape. The state's recent legalization of sports wagering has led to a surge in calls for assistance, revealing both opportunities and challenges in the industry.
The Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling (KYCPG) is observing Problem Gambling Awareness Month this March, with a particular focus on the impact of legalized sports betting in the state. Gerrimy Keiffer, a community health evaluator and KYCPG board member, emphasizes the importance of proper screening for gambling disorders.
'We're not asking the right questions,' Keiffer notes, pointing to the often undetected nature of gambling use disorders. The council advises bettors to gamble responsibly, setting clear limits on time and money spent, and avoiding immediate access to additional funds while playing.
A simple three-question self-test has proven effective in identifying potential gambling issues. These questions probe changes in behavior, secrecy around gambling activities, and financial troubles resulting from betting.
Since Kentucky legalized sports betting, the number of residents seeking information on problem gambling has significantly increased. In January alone, the center received 270 calls, with 68 related to gambling issues and five callers reporting suicidal thoughts.
Keiffer highlights a concerning trend: 'Gambling-use issue does have one of the highest rates of suicide risk of any non-substance-use addiction.' He also notes that online sports betting issues tend to affect a younger demographic compared to traditional casino gambling.
The KYCPG's 28th annual Educational and Awareness Conference, scheduled for March 13-14 in Florence, Kentucky, will address these emerging challenges. Open to the public, the conference will feature expert presentations on identifying, treating, and preventing problem gambling in the evolving betting landscape.
As the sports betting industry continues to grow in Kentucky, the focus on responsible gambling and support for those affected becomes increasingly crucial. The state's experience serves as a valuable case study for other regions considering or implementing sports betting legislation.
