The prize fund for the Davis Cup currently is €23 million. It is not just the players that take home some of the prize money though. The federations of each country that oversee the sport will benefit from how well their team performs.

The first tournament

Davis was one of the players in the first tournament and his team won their first three matches. In the years that followed the tournament expanded to include other countries, including Belgium, Austria and France. It was in 1972 that it became a knockout tournament. The organizers created a tiered system of competition in 1981 and since then there have been regular revisions to the format.

Everything about tennis

Tennis has become one of the most popular spectator sports in the world. While players from the USA dominated the sport in the 80s and 90s, players from other countries have since taken some of the major world tournaments such as Wimbledon, the French Open and the US Open.

All of these are televised and viewing figures are always high. In most championships, men will play matches that are the best of five sets, while women will play the best of three sets.

The rules of the game do not vary though and most tennis tournaments will feature singles tournaments for both men and women, doubles tournaments for both men and women and mixed doubles events. Some major sport tournaments offer wheelchair sporting events, junior tournaments and seniors events.

The first thing to do when betting on sports tournaments is find a good sports betting site and register. They will require some personal details to sign up and some sites will require the individual to provide proof of age and address. This will depend on the site and the user’s own location.

Then the user should check to make sure that the payment method they want to use to put money onto their betting account is accepted. Most will take payment methods such as credit and debit cards, e-wallets such as PayPal but some will also accept bank transfers.

The next step is to place the bet. The user should consider the type of bet that they want to place, whether they want to bet on the outcome of the individual match or the team knock out sections or the overall tournament and then place the bets accordingly.

The earlier the bet is placed the easier it is to get good odds. As the matches progress, the betting sites will adjust the odds accordingly. Once the bet is placed the details on the website will show the results and any win will be paid into the user’s online account.

History of the Davis Cup

It is thought that the idea for the first tournament came from James Dwight. In 1881 he became president of the newly-formed US National Lawn Tennis Association. He was keen to know how well the US players matched up against their British counterparts. Prior to 1900, a few tours were arranged between the two countries but the US was keen to create a formal sporting event.

Three players from Great Britain attended an initial tournament, which was attended by Dwight D Davis. It was hoped that he would be able to offer prize money for the participants.

This was followed by a few attempts at further tournaments which were either abandoned or did not deliver strong players. In 1899, a team of players travelled around the US to challenge the best players from all corners of the country. This led to further consideration of the idea of an international event.

Dwight Davis purchased a sterling silver trophy, at a cost of around $1000. However, apart from this, it is not clear how the tournament came to bear Davis’ name. There are stories that he developed the competitions’ format but research has shown this to be inaccurate.
